Torchwood
The first episode of Torchwood didn't really impress me that much. The use of a character representing the audience being introduced to the whos, whats, hows and whys of the series premise is a standard pilot device but I don't think it worked well here. The only real plot here was Gwen discovers Torchwood and joins them, so why the long tease of revealing Torchwood to Gwen only to rub it out of her memory afterwards? I thought the subplots - the misdirection of the Weevil and the murderer-within - were underdeveloped as a result.
The hospital scene bugged me. What was Torchwood doing for the five minutes or so while Gwen was standing in the main corridor talking to a 'man in a mask'? The only thing I can think of is they were using Gwen as bait, because as soon as the alien attacked the speaking extra out they rushed to capture it. (I did laugh at her use of the phrase "playing silly-buggers").
Also I assumed that part of the premise was that Torchwood was keeping aliens a secret, yet Harkness bemoans Gwen for not believing there was a spacecraft over London or a Cyberman in every home? So I guess Torchwood are happy for people to know and believe in aliens, as long as Torchwood (only) deal with them? It's not the standard approach of a secret organisation in shows like this but I guess I'll wait and see how the stories develop.
(And leaving aside that the Cybermen in question were interdimensional and not extraterrestrial, those lines felt like a bit of fan service and pretty meaningless to people who'd not seen Doctor Who.)
I will keep watching to see what a regular episode is like but I wonder how long it will stay on in the timeslot given the bad overpromotion it's first episode got.
Channel Ten has been flogging ads for this show for weeks in all kinds of timeslots without really explaining what the show is. How many viewers were turned off though by the liberal use of "fuck"? How many were giving the show a chance until arterial blood started spurting? How many Channel Ten viewers didn't understand the Welsh accents in a show that only featured an "American" speaking in the ads?
There's at least one viewer putting his hand up to say he was annoyed by the constant reference in the ads to "the man who can not die" which spoilt the shock of seeing Harkness shot in the head in the episode's climax.

Stick with it, the next few episodes are not very good, but the show does get better over time.
Yes, the man who can not die annoyed me too - because I knew that was a giant spoiler!
I've seen a few more of the eps and there are some really good ones and there are some just bad ones.
If it was a test than it makes more sense. I guess they had to do something once they saw them use the glove on the body at the start.
Of course the simple option would have been just to give her the amnesia pill straight away but anyway...)
I will keep watching, but if it gets pulled like Ten is want to do, I'm not sure I'd rush to download the episodes like I did with The Office or Veronica Mars.
